The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation is 40 year old nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy, research and educational institute that aims to help improve the socioeconomic circumstances of African Americans and other underserved communities. In other words , it is a think thank setup to help others.

This historical institution holds an annual conference in the Nations Capitol every year during the month of September. The event annually hosts lectures, leadership awards, prayer breakfast, networking event,and a Phoenix Awards Annual Dinner.

This event always brings in famous people from the business community, entertainment community and government leaders from across the country and government reps from different parts of the world. The event is open to the public and has various pricing plans for all to attend that have an interest in the actives of the CBCF.

A brief list is below but, the conferences has over 50 events for people to attend.

CBCF ANNUAL PRAYER BREAKFAST TO FEATURE DR. JAMAL-HARRISON BRYANT

Foundation Will Also Appeal for Its Haitian Relief Fund WASHINGTON - The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) will continue in its rich tradition of hosting a spirit-filled morning with its 40th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) Prayer Breakfast from 7:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. on September 18 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Dr. Jamal- Harrison Bryant, pastor of Empowerment Temple in Baltimore, Md., will deliver the morning message. Empowerment Temple is one of the fastest growing churches in the A.M.E. denomination.

The prayer breakfast comes on the closing day of the ALC - a four day educational outlet from September 15-18 which highlights the mission of CBCF - to develop leaders, to inform policy and to educate the public. It also provides almost 100 forums to address the critical challenges facing the African-American community.

Grammy Award winning artist, Fred Hammond will participate in the Prayer Breakfast. Joining him is Brenda Jackson, an European sensation who will dazzle the audience with her five-octave range as she performs a fusion of opera and gospel (http://www.jackson-brenda.com/).

"The Prayer Breakfast has become a much anticipated event which attracts sometimes three or four generations of families," said Elsie L. Scott, president and CEO of CBCF. "Because of the religious diversity across America, we have speakers from different denominations to reflect the many beliefs held in this country. The common thread is the prayers asking for guidance in governing our families, our communities, our nation and our world."

Celebration of Leadership in Fine Arts Also Honors Student Scholarship Winners

This year's honorees are Alice Walker, poet, activist, and author of the iconic novel, "The Color Purple," and Robert Townsend, screenwriter, humanitarian, actor, and director of numerous films and television programs.

More than 350 performing and visual arts students applied for this national scholarship program - an increase of about 33 percent from last year. Twenty students will receive scholarships; 10 performing arts scholarships, and 10 visual arts scholarship. "The increase in scholarship applications indicates the importance of the arts programs in schools," said Mereda Davis Johnson, CBC Spouse chair. "The Spouses recognize that students should have a full realm of academic challenges as well as opportunities to explore the fine arts."

CBCF Phoenix Awards Annual Dinner

Four distinguished individuals will receive the prestigious Phoenix Award during the fundraiser dinner: Harry Belafonte, actor and humanitarian; Simeon Booker, renowned journalist; Judith Jamison, choreographer; and the Honorable Shelia Y. Oliver, Speaker of the New Jersey State Assembly.

The award's name is a tribute to the prediction of Rep. George White, the last black representative to serve in Congress until 1928. Recent past recipients of the award include Wyclef Jean, humanitarian, Cicely Tyson, actress, and then-Senator Barack Obama.

The awards ceremony and dinner serves as the grand finale for the ALC which is scheduled from September 15-18 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

U.S. Reps. Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland and Diane E. Watson of California are serving as honorary co-chairs of ALC. This year's theme, "Celebrating the Vision, Continuing the Journey, Advancing the Mission" provides guidance for meeting the challenges and opportunities facing the country and present a new way forward.

Black Female Execs Poised to Give Straightforward Advice at CBCF Networking Luncheon

The luncheon, scheduled from 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m., on September 16, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, in Washington, D.C., is a featured part of the 40th ALC.

The authors, Elaine Meryl Brown, Marsha Haygood, and Rhonda Joy McLean, will review their book and share their wisdom with the lunch attendees. The book is a "road map," of sorts, to navigate the waters of corporate America. It provides straightforward advice on topics such as stereotypes, and self pity.
