Tavis Smiley is a famous talk show host, activist, and author. Tavis has expressed his concerns about Barack Obama on many occasions. People may recall Tavis upset with Obama because Obama did not appear at a major African American event. Tavis has asked Obama to talk more about black problems that African American face living day to day in America. Recently, while on MSNBC, Tavis made the following statement relating to Obama's victory for the United States Presidential race.

"Hawaii to Chicago is not the same as Mississippi to Chicago."

If we look at this statement and take a closer look a Smiley, we may find something interesting. If we start with some background facts about Smiley, we may gain a little more understanding of these few choice words.

One fact is Tavis was born in Gulfport, Mississippi. He and his family moved to Indiana later in his young life. Smiley's family nearly doubled because of an extending family situation. He later went to Indiana University and interned for Tom Bradley. This was a key point in Smiley's life.

Many people may not know that Smiley ran for a political office in 1991. Smiley ran for a Los Angeles' city council seat. Smiley lost and started a career in television and radio.

One has to ask themselves at least one question. Who is the guy from Mississippi to Chicago? Although Smiley may fit the shoes of the guy from Mississippi to Chicago, everyone is sure that he was not thinking of himself when he made the comparison.
